Question: What is the process for getting immigration status in the U.S.?

Answer: There are many different ways that a person can apply for and receive immigration status, so it’s going to depend on that specific circumstance. However, a common method is for a close family member to file for a person who is their immediate relative. Once that form is approved, the person can apply to become a permanent resident in the United States.

There are sometimes waiting periods, depending on how close the family relationship is, and there may be a waiting period to wait through in order to get to that point. But then the person can petition to become a permanent resident. So that’s one common way.

Another common way is for a person who is outside of the United States who either has an immediate relative or has a job that they have received an immigration benefit through can apply to become an immigrant into the United States. And that process then goes through the consulate in the country that they are in at the time.
