Answer: A writ is actually a court order requiring an agency to do something. For example, we have filed writs to ask the court to order a person to be released from prison for various reasons. We recently had a successful situation where we argued on a writ of habeas corpus that a person was incarcerated wrongfully due to the ineffectiveness of his attorney at a probation revocation hearing. He was released from prison after those filings.
