Balen Essak-Hernandez

Attorney Balen Essak-Hernandez prides himself on client-centered advocacy. Your goal is his goal, and he will do whatever it takes to pursue the result you deserve. Balen has won cases through negotiation, motion practice, and not guilty verdicts at trial. He ensures that his clients are informed at every step of the process so they can make knowledgeable decisions about their cases.

Balen graduated summa cum laude from Washington and Lee University with a major in Economics and a minor in Poverty Studies. He then spent two years working for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., before earning his J.D. from Yale Law School.

Free Case Evaluation

While at Yale, Balen gained valuable direct-services experience with the Criminal Justice Clinic, Housing Clinic, and Re-entry Clinic. He also helped low-income New Haven residents apply to law school through the Access to Law School Clinic. Balen spent his 1L summer working for the Homicide Direct Appeals Division of the Oklahoma public defender, where he primarily assisted with capital appeals. During his 2L summer, Balen interned for the Milwaukee Trial Division of the Wisconsin State Public Defender.

Upon graduation, Balen received Yale Law School’s Stephen J. Massey Prize, recognizing his dedication, commitment, and contribution to public service.

After law school, Balen returned to his hometown of Milwaukee as an Assistant State Public Defender. During his time there, he represented clients in misdemeanor, felony, and revocation proceedings. He credits his time as a public defender with fueling his passion to tirelessly advocate for all clients, regardless of their circumstances or background.

Balen specializes in OWI cases, firearm cases, and Fourth Amendment challenges.
